  2. To small extent, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, the NSS curriculum integrated four years senior form to three years only. This curriculum integrated four years knowledge to three years, students need to learn something which is not suitable in their level. It may be too difficult for them to study. Therefore, students may not be able to get a good result in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education. Thus, they will be unable to survive well in the 21st century which is a knowledge base society. Nowadays, people need to have a great diploma in order to survive well in the 21st century. However, as the curriculum is too difficult to students, they cannot get a good result and diploma in public exam. It leaves them cannot be able to survive well.

Second, the new senior secondary curriculum increases many different elective subjects, such as health management, tourism and so on. Also, students can choose to study their favorite subjects under the new curriculum. For example, students can choose to study science subjects and art subjects at the same time. It is a good news because students can choose their elective subjects freely. Thus, it can enhance students’ knowledge in different aspects, and also explore students’ interest in study.

However, students may become unprofessional if they study irrelevant subjects. Finally, they will be uncompetitive and unable to survive well in 21st century. It is because the knowledge base society requires professional workers. If students choose to study biology and Chinese literature, but not chemistry, they may not be able to understand all the content of science and become not professional than those who study biology and chemistry.

Also, the new examination system may not be accredited by the top university of other countries. It is because the exam system is not the same as other countries. Students may not be able to study the top universities so as to get a better diploma. Therefore, they are less competitive when comparing with the other students who are graduated in top universities. Hence, they cannot survive well in the 21st century since they have fewer chances to get in excellent job.

Moreover, students cannot be well prepared as the examination system is new. They don’t familiar with the new exam system. They don’t have past papers to prepare for the public exam, too. Thus, they may not be able to get an excellent result in the HKDSE. Students may become uncompetitive than the students who were under the old system.

To summarize the above-mentioned opinions, I don’t think that the new senior secondary curriculum can help adolescent survive well in the 21st century. Although this curriculum has some advantages, the disadvantages are more than that. Therefore, this curriculum cannot help adolescents.

Group5: Your group mentioned that the new senior secondary curriculum is more flexible than the previous one. It is because students can select whatever they like. However, students may become uncompetitive if they study irrelevant elective subjects although they like. They will be unprofessional as they study something is no relationship between subjects. Do you still think that the new curriculum can help adolescent to survive well in the 21st century under the flexible curriculum?

Group7: Your group mentioned that students can learn different knowledge in different subjects. However, students will become unprofessional if they study irrelevant subjects. For example, students select to study biology and Chinese literature. They can have the knowledge of biology and Chinese literature at the same time. However, they just have half of the knowledge of biology. Since biology is relevant with chemistry, if students study other subjects instead of chemistry, they can only study half of them. Therefore, they are not be professional than others who are studying biology and chemistry. So, do you think that the new curriculum can help adolescent survive well in the 21st century although they can have knowledge of different subjects?

  5. To a small extent and we don’t think the new senior secondary school system can help the adolescent to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

People in 21st century are required to have in-depth and variety knowledge, also, people must acquire the university certificate for finding a general job as in 21st century, the university certificate will become normal and usual. Furthermore, as Hong Kong is an international city as well as the tendency of globalization, people are required to acquainted foreign broad experiences, such as able to speak in fluency foreign languages, abreast with the latest in the opposite side of world, as well as have a widespread interpersonal network all throughout the world.

China is a potential developing country, moreover, the United State is the most advanced technology country, and the reason of the change of Senior Secondary school system is because the old senior secondary system in Hong Kong is differ from both China and United State, therefore, government is decided to change the senior secondary system in order to increase the connection with China and United State.

However, we don’t think the new senior secondary (NSS) system is able to help adolescent to survive in 21st century.

    ReplyDelete
  6. First, although the NSS is more flexible on choosing the elective subjects for adolescent, also adolescent can choose the elective subject with the accordance of their own interest and strength. However, some student may choose altogether science, literature as well as economy at the moment. As our opinion, some subjects are having linkage with each other, just like science subjects, biology, chemistry and physic are inter- related, if student didn’t study both 3subjects, if may affect student’s understanding toward the subject. Eventually, it will affect the academic result of adolescent, then the decrease the chance of getting in university relatively.

Nevertheless, if the combination of 3 elective subjects is irrelevant, adolescent may required to give up either one of the elective subject in the university, and it is wasting the time of adolescent.

Second, in 2012, there will be more competitive for fighting the quota of university, as the result, both F.6 and F.7 students will have less chance for getting in school. In the 21st century, the number of university student are numerous, moreover, the university certificate has already became the must in the future, if a person without a university certificate, he or she must not able to survive in the 21st century indeed.

Third, as the NSS is merely required one public examination before entering the university, thus, it may cause decrease in the quality of university student. In old senior secondary system, adolescent are required to take two public examination before entering university, therefore, some students who have poor academic result or indifferent in study, they will be reduced in F.5 level, then those spare student is having the better quality than the NSS student. As the same time, as the old senior system student are required to face two extreme difficult “check point” before enter the school, therefore, the old senior system student will more treasure the chance of studying in the university and they will be more hard working and get a much better result in university with the comparison of NSS student. Furthermore, the old senior system student have more experience and mature attitude to face stress, therefore, the NSS system isn’t really able to help adolescent survive in 21st century.

To sum up, as the abovementioned, the NSS system isn’t really capable for helping adolescent survive in the 21st century. As our point of view, the real effective way for adolescent survive in 21st century is let adolescent more approach with the reality, such as arrange student do the part- time job that are related to their academic during vocation, to let student know that the knowledge in the booklet is able and usually appear in the social; environment, its not only increase the interest of adolescent, as well as upgrade adolescent’s critical thinking, creativity and problem solving skill too. And those skills must be able to help adolescent survive in the 21st century indeed.

    1. Group9(large extent)
Don't focus on one sphere of knowledge

-> Althougt the NSS is flexible, however, it's not holistic. The system allowed student to choose their electives freely, but the combination of the elective subjects often lack of linkage, and it is not good to student.

    2. Group (large extent)
    Increase interest in study

->Although the NSS is provided different combination of elective, other learning experience and so on, such kind of "interesting" things. However, there are teachers and students complained about the freedom combination of elective is too messy, moreover, the other learnign experience is too boring and wasting time for study.

  8. To a small extent, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

To be able to survive well in the society, students need to digest all the knowledge they have learn, have innovation practice, high adventure quotient, high intellectual quotient, high emotional quotient, corporate with others, hard working, enthusiastic in their work, active and positive and the like.

Firstly, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum have abbreviated four years course in to three years. This changing make student feel difficult to study because the junior student need to learn difficult knowledge which is not their level and the course may delete some part. Students learn fewer so that they have less knowledge than the old system student. Also, the abridged time make student have less time to prepare for the public exam. This result in the poor achievement in public exam and then the quality of student may lower – they become not competitive, leading to lack of elites in society.

Secondly, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum allows students to have different kind of subjects in order to encourage students try different subject. It do not like the old system – people can choose subject in arts only, subjects in science only or subjects in finance only, they can’t choose both at the same time. It allows students to choose no matter arts, science and finance at the same time. Undoubted, this can help student to develop various interest in different part of knowledge. However, this make student learn things not full-scale, like science – biology needs some chemical and physical knowledge, chemical needs some biology and physical knowledge, physical needs some biology and chemical knowledge, they are inter-related. If student miss one of the subject, they may learn thing harder as they don’t have such knowledge as their base. Then the students may not be competent for some professional job like doctors, nurses and so on.

Thirdly, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum cut the throat of the last students in old systems. They are also the pillar of the future society. They have a big pressure as if they can’t get into university, they cannot repeat the old system’s course. They have no chance to be better. This may lead to the run off of elite because some of the student may be failure because of some mistake or external factors. This is unfair to them and not beneficial to society.

In conclusion, I still think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum cannot help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century because of the above-mentioned reason. I know things cannot be perfect all the time. So in order to help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century, I think some chaining like exercitation in different shop and have intercourse of different country can be given to the students to sharpen their competitive edges.

  10. To a large extend, I think that the New Senior Secondary can help the students to be able to survive in the 21st Century. The Education Bureau has just introduced the New Senior Secondary to the students. Students have to study three years for both the Junior and Senior Secondary and four years for the university under the new system. In the 21st Century, people have to have some special characteristics and take up some different challenges as to survive well.

What are the characteristics of adolescents who can survive well in the 21st century? Hong Kong is a knowledge-based city, so knowledge (IQ) definitely is a must or something like the basic requirement for the adolescents. As more and more people are able to go into the university, being a university graduate is very common and it is like a ‘ticket’ to work in the society. So, definitely we need more as to survive, knowledge (IQ) is not enough, we need the other two ‘Qs’- EQ and AQ too. We have to know how to cope with adversity and how to control our emotion. EQ and AQ are able to reduce the pressures and we can do better without pressure.

Furthermore, other skills like organizing and social skill are important too. Having a good organization can help to increase the efficiency in work, because we can get the information easily as to save time. Social skill is like an anchor in the 21st century, we need to build up a good interpersonal relationship network as to get helps from others. Moreover, creativity and the technology skill are really important. In the 21st century, creativity is the most important element that we need. We have to be creative and create different new things, because we need new things to improve the whole society. Technology skill is a must, because we need to use different technological devices to handle the work.

The biggest feature of the NSS is that students can study both the arts, science and commerce subjects. Unlike the old system, students do not have to choose to study one aspect only, the NSS is multidimensional. We cannot focus on only one aspect in the 21st century; we have to think in a different way, to combine all the aspects together. We need to explore in different angles as to take a different idea. As mentioned, we have to be creative, and it means that we should put things together, to create new thing. Furthermore, we can apply the knowledge of another aspect into the work that we are doing. For example, we may need to have some ideas about history for architecture, which history is an art subject and architecture is a science subject.

The compulsory Other Learning Experience (OLE) is another good point of the NSS. Students have to attend different activities other than the normal lessons. Students have to join activities for minimum 15% of the lesson time. The OLE can help students to have more experiences, like work experience, voluntary work experience and visiting experience. This can help the students to get used to the community, to know what is like in the society. For this, adolescents can anticipate what will happen when they finish their education, what will happen when they are at work. Moreover, it can help the student to get a better resume and the students will be easier to get the job or continue their further education. Students can establish the life skills that needed in the 21st century while attending the activities.

  11. The Liberal Studies is a new subject in the NSS that can help the adolescents to survive well in the 21st century. Liberal Studies is a new subject in the NSS. Liberal studies teaches adolescents different kind of life skills, how to cope with adversity, the ways to solve conflicts and others, which are essential skill for adolescents to survive well in the 21st century. Liberal Studies includes the issue discussion which other subjects do not have too. The issue discussion can help the adolescents to understand the hot issue in the society and it can improve our sense to the society. It helps to improve our awareness to the news and the society. The Liberal Studies is able to train the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century, to be the future leaders and even to be competitive.

To sum up, the NSS can definitely help the students to be able to survive well in the 21st century. It is because it provides different measures to help the adolescents- studying both arts and science subjects, having the compulsory Other Learning Experience and studying the Liberal Studies. All of these measures can help to train the students to have the characteristics of adolescents who can survive well in the 21st century. It is definitely not a matter for students to survive well in the 21st century if they study the NSS well. I can even say that the NSS is tailor-made for students to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

    Group 5:
Your group has mentioned that the NSS has included the applied learning. However, the applied learning is not accepted by the university, students cannot apply the university by the result of the applied learning subjects. Then, the students who selected the applied learning subject will suffer when they apply for university.

    Group 7:
Your group has mentioned that the NSS can raise students' interest. However, for students who want to study 'physics, chemistry and biology', which are the science subjects, they will not able to study their favorite subjects. Then students will feel miserable for they have to study their unwanted subjects.

  13. To a large extent, I think Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

To survive well in the 21st century, adolescents should have different kinds of knowledge and a high education level. It is because if they do not have different kinds of knowledge and a high education level, they cannot find their jobs in 21st century. Moreover, they also need to have different kinds of life skill, for example: time management skills, problems solving skills, financial management skills and so on.

Undoubtedly, New Senior Secondary is a new system, many things are not prepare well and most of the students confuse about the system. For instance, the students confuse about if they cannot get into the university, they can repeat studying S.6 or not. However, I still think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century

First, New Senior Secondary system can help teenagers to become more comprehensive, it is because the youngsters can choose the subjects from both art subject, science subject and commerce subject. For instance, a student can choose biology, economics and Chinese literature as his/her electives subjects. As a result, he/she can learn different knowledge from different subjects.

Second, Other Learning Experience (OLE) becomes a compulsory part of the system, the minimum time allocation is around 15 percents of the total lesson time. Other Learning Experience can broaden the horizon of the youngsters. In addition, students can increase their experience of the society through joining the OLE activities, as a result, they can be more realistic.

Third, New Senior Secondary system adds one more core subject, which is Liberal Studies. When having the Liberal Studies lessons, students can develop critical thinking skill. It is because during the Liberal Studies lessons, teachers will hold some discussions, as a result, the students will have more opportunities to think about the Hong Kong issues.

Last but not least, teenagers can choose their elective subjects according to their interest. Moreover, there are some new subjects for students to choose, such as: Health Management and Social Care and Tourism and Hospitality. Thus, students will become more proactive in the lessons.

To sum up, although New Senior Secondary is a new system, it helps teenagers to become more comprehensive. So, I think Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  14. To large extent, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century. The 334 system needs students to study in Secondary schools for 6 years and university for 4 years. Also, Liberal Studies becomes one of the core subjects.
To survive well in the society, the adolescents need to learn different knowledge, creativity, high EQ, high AQ, good communicate skill and so on.
Unquestionably, the NSS Curriculum compress 4 years course into 3 years. The students may not be able to learn well because they need to learn more things within a shorter time. Also, the % of the students that can get into the university is around 18% now. It is much lower than the old curriculum (around 50%). The students may have more pressure because they are more difficult to get into the university.
On the other hand, students can study arts, science and commerce subjects at the same time. In the old curriculum, students cannot study arts and science subjects at the same time. This can help students to learn different knowledge. They can use the knowledge to invent or discover new things, thus enhance their creativity. Creativity is very important to us. Without creativity, the society won’t improve.
Next, the new subject Liberal Studies becomes a one of the core subjects. That means all students need to study it. LS can train us to think things in different aspect. In our daily life, when we are facing adversities or problem, we cannot just focus in one aspect. We need to think in different aspect, think different solutions and choose the best way to solve the problems. Solving problem is also an important skill because we may not always receive other helps. Sometimes, we need to solve the problem by ourselves and to be independent.
Furthermore, OLE can help us to earn more experience. All students need to join OLE activities in the NSS curriculum. When the students joining the OLE activities, they can learn more things or earn more experience. For example: Visiting the elderly can help adolescents to improve the adolescents’ communicate skills with others. Also, they can learn more about the society and they can be more ease to get into the society.
Moreover, the result of HKDSE is accepted by other countries like USA. So that they have more chance to develop in other countries.
In conclusion, I think the new NSS curriculum can help the adolescents to learn more, train their creativity, become more independent and so on. Those are very important to us and can help us to survive well in the society.

  15. The New Senior Secondary (NSS) academic structure was implemented in 2009.To a large extent, I think New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21th century.

Firstly, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can raise students' interest. It is because there are more options between subjects such as Health Management and Social Care, Tourism and Hospitality Studies and so forth. When the students can study the subjects that they are interested in, they may be more diligent. Moreover, they will be also more motivated to learn. Then, they may have more knowledge in certain area. Since knowledge is very important in the 21th century, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21th century.

Secondly, the Other Learning Experiences (OLE) in the New Senior Secondary Curriculum is realistic. It is because it includes Moral and Civic Education, Aesthetic Development, Physical Development, Community Service and Career-related experiences. It aims to promote a balanced and whole-person development of students, foster life-long learning capacities and develop students’ abilities in different. Then, it can enrich students' experience. Since life experience is very significant in the 21th century, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21th century.

However, the new exam system may not be accredited by the top university. That means, the students' educational record may not be approved. Then, the students may not study in the top university. They can not enrich their knowledge in a higher level. As a result, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum may not effectively help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21th century.

All in all, the implement of New Senior Secondary Curriculum has many advantages like enriching students' life experience. Hence, I think the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21th century.

  16. To what extent, New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century?

To a small extent, I think that New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

Nowadays, Hong Kong is an ever-changing knowledge-based society. In order to survive well in the 21st century, the adolescents have to study hard, and be creative. Also, they need to have good social skill, high Adversity Quotient, independent critical thinking and so on. If one performs well in aforementioned aspects, they will be competitive and find a good job more easily. However, under New Senior Secondary Curriculum, I don't think that the adolescents can survive well in the 21st century.

First of all, the adolescents are allowed to choose different types of subjects under this new curriculum so that they could learn and experience more in various perspectives. For example, they can choose Biology, Business Management and Chinese Literature at the same time. Although it may enhance the adolescents' study interest, the adolescents may not study the electives well and specifically. As these three electives may be irrelevant, it may influence their understanding on the subjects. And then, the adolescents may not learn well in these subjects. Finally, it may affect their academic results. Besides, they may become relatively less competitive when comparing with those who study the relevant electives specifically (e.g. Physic, Biology and Chemistry).

Second, apart from this reason, many people are also query about the qualification of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). Since this new exam system may not credited by other foreign universities. Because of that, even if the adolescents get an excellent result (5**) in HKDSE, they may not have qualification to study the top foreign universities. Therefore, it may affect their competitiveness to find job and study oversea.

Third, the adolescents' learning attitudes may not be as serious as those under old education system. In the past, adolescents have to take two public examinations (i.e. HKCEE and A-Level) in form 5 and form 7 respectively. After taking HKCEE, they may have experiences of taking public exam. Also, it may change their learning attitudes and inspire them that studying hard could enhance their competitiveness to find a good job. However, under this new education system, adolescents only need to take one public examination in form 6. Although it could reduce their study pressures, they may not have experience of taking public exam. And then, they may not take it serious. As they may think that everyone can study to form 6 without elimination by public exam. Thus, they may not treasure the chance of studying and become frivolous. Eventually, they may not be competitive among those under old education system.

To sum up, as there are still many problems under the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, I think that the new education curriculum is unable to help adolescents survive well in the 21st century.

    ReplyDelete
  17. To small extent, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, The Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum cannot specialise in the subjest, it due to the reason that the change of curriculum make student and teachers cannot prepare well, the schedule of the subject need to change, that may lead to a insufficient time of learning. Also, not enough time make student can’t learn the detail of the whole subject.

Second, the exam of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum make the student and teachers cannot have a well prepare. Teachers have no experiences of the new exam, they only can guess what will involved in the exam. Student have no any past paper or not sufficient past paper to do before the exam. Thus, it is very difficult to balance the old education system and the new system. The new education system is more difficult to get in the university. They only have one exam and one chances to go into it, but the old education system have two public exams before student get into the university.

Third, LS is a new core subject of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum. LS can help students to develop their critical thinking skills ,let them have more chances to discuss the social issues . However, I think LS is too board and not in-depth.

Fourth, In the pervious education system, there are 2 public examinations, HKCEE can help student to built up and know the atmosphere of public exam. Let them have more experiences of how to control the stress and how to manages the revision time. In the new system, all student can study to form 6 without any examinations. Those student may not cherish the education degree as very important , So their study attitude may change, the learning attitudes may not as serious as old system.

To sum up, I concur that the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century to a small extent. It is because the new Senior Secondary Curriculum brought many insufficinet to both teachers and student, including the time and perpare.

    ReplyDelete
  18. To the large extent, New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong helps our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century. In 21st century, adolescents require having high Adversity Quotient (AQ) which means adolescents face adversity with an optimistic attitude and try their best to solve the problem confronting them and also require having different kinds of knowledge, high EQ, good communicating skill with foreign people, creativity in order to become more competitive and survive well in this knowledge-basic city.

Unquestionably, those students may feel difficult to study because they do not have enough time to learn the knowledge. In the old curriculum, students have four years to learn that knowledge. However, in New Senior Secondary Curriculum, students just have three years to learn, they may not totally understand the topic so that become less competitive.

However, New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help adolescents to find their interest in order to strength it, so that become more competitive. In old curriculum, students are able to choose in three different kinds of subjects which are language, economic and science. If the student is interest in history, physic and Chinese Literature, the student will give up physic because there is some limitation to choose subjects. Thus, the student just learns one kind of knowledge. However, in New Senior Secondary Curriculum, students are able to choose their favorable subjects without limitation, the student can study in history, physic and Chinese Literature. So that they can get good academic result and learn different kinds of knowledge in order to find the job easily. So they have ability to earn the living to pay the living cost and survive well.

Moreover, adolescents have a chance to receive higher level education. In old curriculum, students are able to get high result in two public exams so as to become more competitive in 21st century. The student, who is weak in language, cannot get pass in HKCEE public exam. So that he/she does not have the chance to study in form six in order to receive more knowledge. However, in New Senior Secondary Curriculum, the student, who weak in study, can study in form six and learn more knowledge so as to become more competitive.

To sum up, New Senior Secondary Curriculum can let adolescents to learn more knowledge and find their interest in order to become more competitive, so that survive well in 21st century.

  19. The New Senior Secondary curriculum introduces 3 years junior form, 4 years senior form and 4 years university education. It integrates the 4 years high school education into 3 years. Students need to study 4 cores subjects: Chinese, English, Mathematics, Liberal Studies, and 3 electives chose by students from 15 subjects. Other Learning Experiences are also required compulsorily which occupies 15% of the total learning hours. Students must reach the requirement of having 405 hours of Other Learning Experiences within the 3 years of high school.

Under the introduction of the New Senior Secondary curriculum, students are able to choose their favourite subjects to study in and the compulsory requirement of the Other Learning Experiences can ensure adolescents to learn some life skills. But to a small extent, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, there may be no relationship between the electives chosen by the student. The EDB claims that the good point of running the New Senior Secondary curriculum is that students can choose the subjects they are interested in or has talent. That is true, where students can choose their favourite subjects in the New Senior Secondary curriculum such as choosing Chinese history, Economics and Biology as their electives, which violates the stream dividing scheme in the past curriculum. But on the other hand, students are not specific enough for their knowledge. In Biology, some Chemistry knowledge is also required. If the student did not study Chemistry, they may be much more difficult to catch up and could not understand some concepts. This would affect one’s academic result in that subject. If one does not get a satisfactory result, and feeling they are not talented in the subject, they may feel unhappy or even give up studying the subject. Thus, students are unable to survive in the 21st century which is a knowledge-based society. Also, students may not know the related concepts which are taught in other electives and become uncompetitive with other countries’ students.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Second, some concepts are too hard for the F.4 or F.5 students to study. As the syllabus of the high school education is integrated from 4 years to 3 years, some concepts which were taught in F.6 or F.7 are now moved to be taught in F.4 and F.5. There must be some reasons for that topic to teach in F.6 or F.7 but not F.4 nor F.5. May be the topic needs more knowledge, the experiment is hard to do or the concept is hard to understand. So that is why that topic is taught in F.6 or F.7 in the past. So the F.4 students under the New Senior Secondary curriculum need to learn something which is originally taught in higher forms. They may not handle some concepts well as they do not have enough knowledge to explain the fact. Use Biology as an example. The topic of photosynthesis and cell division are taught in F.4 in the New Senior Secondary curriculum but not in the past. Students may have many queries about the concept or not really understand them. They may not get a good result if they are not totally understand about the topic and may affect their interest in study. Moreover, owing to the integration of high school education into 3 years, some concepts which are needed to know in the past are cut out of the new syllabus. Therefore, some basic concepts should be known are not taught in school, students learn less knowledge and may not be able to competitive with other countries’ students in entering the university. A high education level is important for one to survive in the 21st century, so the New Senior Secondary curriculum does not help the adolescents to survive in the 21st century.

Third, the compulsory education is raised to F.6. On one hand, a higher education level helps one to get a better job in the future. But on the other hand, if one is not interested in studying but in other life skills. One more year of education may worsen their situation as they need to wait for one more year in order to go into the society for full-time learning their interested life skill. Not only knowledge is important for adolescents to survive in the 21 century, life skills could also help one to survive in the 21 century. As Hong Kong is a tertiary society, which mainly provide customers with services, life skills could also help one to find a good job to earn enough money for living.

In conclusion, although the introduction of the New Senior Secondary curriculum allows students to choose subjects on their own and provide with compulsory other learning activities to ensure their skills, but the integration of high school education, the raise compulsory education and the freely choosing subjects characteristic of the New Senior Secondary curriculum make me think that the New Senior Secondary curriculum is unable to help the adolescents to survive in the 21st century.

“No matter how the world changes in the future, or which direction Hong Kong society takes in its development, as long as our young people are equipped with humanistic qualities and wide horizons, they will seize every opportunity and continue to succeed in their endeavors.…” This slogan is publicizing by the EDB to promote the New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSSC), and it’s exactly what I am thinking: the NSS help adolescents to tackle the 21st Century-challenges. In the following discussion, it can offer a comprehensive examination at the new education system and suggest both the advantages and disadvantages of the NSSC. First, let’s us interpret the background of NSSC.

In the 21st Century, Hong Kong is facing a tremendous challenges, the society is ever-changing and everyone needs to get well prepare in order to survive well in the society. In the past, Hong Kong is an Asia’s world city as well s a Multicultural capital, but we are hard to retain the name of “International Financial Hub” now because of the widespread of globalization. Integration of world pose a knowledge based society, people require being creative, independent and strong adaptability. At the mean time, China rapid development outshine Hong Kong, we are losing the competitive edge in most sectors, it is a must for the new generation to adapt and integrate with Mainland China, make full use of this wide range of opportunities. As a result, NSSC is ought to implement to nurture students to become a competitive citizen when facing the future challenges.

The NSSC introduce us a new learning strategy, education system and purpose that have never been proposed in Hong Kong. There are mainly five teaching strategies throughout the lessons, including Group discussion, projects learning, field study, learning to serve and role play. These measures aim to promote (a) the ability of life-time learning, (b) the multiple learning opportunities. Furthermore, the NSS issue the SBA, OLE and student learning profile, which can lead the student to have self-reflection and thus build up their life goal.

Certainly, when a brand-new policy is introduced to the general public, it must not gain a unanimous support. The NSS may not help adolescents to survive well to some extend, since the new exam system have not been accredited by most top university of foreign country, that makes teenagers can not well prepare for the exam. Also, the new education system compress the learning time from 4 years to 3 years, they may not become more competitive as the entire system is too harsh for them. Nonetheless, I firmly insist that NSSC do nurture competitive adolescents to tackle 21st Century challenges.

Firstly, when we compare the old education system with the new one, we can obviously see that the new one is much better than the original one; most countries adopt the 334 learning structure (except Britain and its colony). In the past, students from the science stream did not take any humanities subjects, and those from the arts stream took no science subjects. This is an utterly failure, Modern society has increasingly multidimensional, and one cannot do with just one sphere of knowledge. The NSS provide a variety of subject combination, students can take History even they had already chosen Physics, it let them to in contact with different sort of knowledge so that broaden their horizon. When teenagers need to contribute the society, they can be more familiar with every sectors or stratum in our community.

  22. Part(2)
Secondly, the NSSC reform the conventional examination system enable youths to think more apart from examination, it combine and HKCEE and HKALE into HKDSE, which is a decisive policy to relocate our education purpose. Before the NSSV is promoted, Hong Kong education is definitely examination oriented. Yet, what is served by the examinations? It serves no educational purpose at all! Examination cannot test moral qualities as well as social skills; meanwhile, it brings a sense of frustration and failure to many students. Very often, we hear the news about adolescent trying to commit suicide because of study pressure, isn’t it imply the wrong target of the old system: examinations do nothing to enhance the ability of adolescents to survive well in the society. Hence, NSSC has been developed to settle this problem. The NSS drives students to learn more and study more thoroughly, take L.S. as a example, in Liberal Studies lesson, students are required to think independently, tools like mind map, essay and presentation strengthen our learning skill, help us to think in a much serious way. Moreover, the new education system trains students to organize ideas and develop a quick mind, this help them to grasp the trait of a competitive person.

Thirdly, students can understand more about their own society, how it’s work and how it’s related to their life. The NSS implement the other learning experience as a compulsory school life learning, it occupies 15% of the learning hours, which is absolutely a breakthrough local education. When we admit students, we do not only consider the candidate’s examination scores in the school subjects of their choice. The EDB hope that those apply for the School of Science or the School of Engineering have wide interest s in knowledge outside the subject domain, e.g. knowledge of the humanities. Training in the humanities can help students apply their professional knowledge in authentic social contexts and help people. Vice versa, through learning to help others in OLE, teens will participate more in visiting or voluntary work and eventually contribute our society. In short, these sorts of knowledge can only be organized in humanities subjects, merely NSSC can result in such great influence to youngsters, it constantly enhance self –confidence and making them dare to bear the social responsibilities.

Last but not least, NSS education able to educate a creative person, let students to grasp a plentiful knowledge in lesson. Nowadays, facing a complex market environment, a successful business leader needs to make accurate and effective decisions and create value for society. With economies around the globe being increasingly unified, workers are required with more than just a rich body of commercial knowledge. Qualities such as an international outlook, multi perspective thinking, excellent analytical power, good communication skills and leadership are all the more important now. Thus, project learning or even independent enquiry study (IES) has become a key in NSSC. Through the project learning, students think independently, act maturely and perform wisely; it is a process of socialization. When they work in the outside world, neither workers or leaders can be ignorant and naïve, everyone has to think comprehensively. Knowledge of the humanities, IES has become necessary nutrients to the fostering of business managers. It helps adolescents to understand and analyze the world, develop a way of thinking, make sound judgment during the trend of globalization.

All in all, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can undoubtedly nurture a competitive adolescent to tackle 21st century challenges, it helps teenagers to develop an industrious, responsible and innovative personalities. No matter how the world changes, teens could have confidence to deal with every challenges.

  23. In the past few years, the education system of Hong Kong has been changed a lot. 334 New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS) is one of the massive modifications. However, is this curriculum can really helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century? To a small extent, I think it can help them.

First of all, the chance for students getting into universities is lessen. Since most of the countries are knowledge-based society. Only those who have high academic result can get a good job. In Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum, students just need to encounter Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Exam (HKDSE). Comparing to the old curriculum, students are all promoted to the public exam in NSS which means competition become keener. In other words, a lot of students will fail to get into universities directly through HKDSE. Those who fail only have to options – study or work. If they study, they have to pay another few years for getting the ticket for colleges. If they choose to work, their educational background cannot earn them a comfortable job, or even become unemployed. Therefore, how can this NSS help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century?

Moreover, students will become less experienced and qualified when they only need to encounter one public examination. In the old curriculum, university students were examined by two public examinations. But now adolescents only face one. This makes them become less competitive. It is because the level of HKCEE and HKALE is generally acknowledged while HKDSE is not familiar by general public. Hence, those who fail to get into universities are not such competitive as the students in the old curriculum. Their results in HKDSE might be difficult to be accepted by the companies. Furthermore, people who overcome more obstacles, have higher EQ and AQ. Therefore, NSS students might not have EQ and AQ as high as those in the old one. Under these circumstances, NSS students are less competitive. So how can they survive well in the 21st century?

Some say that Liberal Studies become a core subject in the NSS is good for students because they can be inspired to think critically. The scope of this subject, however, is too broad, not in-depth and limiting students’ thinking. Although the original idea of adding it into the core subjects is great, it cannot help adolescents to survive well in the 21st century. Teachers train students to think according to the model method for answering questions. This confines students’ thinking to the same way. Society needs people who have independent and creative thinking. When teens are practised to think in the same way, they will be weeded out someday because they are all the same. Hence, how can they be able to survive well in the 21st century?

To sum up, NSS curriculum makes adolescents become less competitive, less experienced and less creative. Therefore, to a small extent, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  24. To a small extent, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

In order for adolescent to survive well in the 21st century, they should have different kinds of knowledge and a high education level. It is because if they do not have different kinds of knowledge and a high education level, they cannot find their jobs in 21st century. Also, they need to have different kinds of life skills too, such as time management skills, problems solving skills, financial management skills and so on.

First, let’s know more about the new curriculum. "334" New Academic Structure represents 3 years of junior secondary education (S1-S3), 3 years of senior secondary education (S4-S6) and 4 years of university education. The 3-year senior secondary education under the New Academic Structure was implemented in S4 in September, 2009 and the 4-year university courses will be implemented in September 2012.

The new curriculum provides different elective subjects for students to choose to study in the 3-year senior secondary, there are no longer pure arts or pure science, and students can choose more flexibly that they can have different combination like Physics, ICT and BAFS. However, this may not help adolescent to survive well. If they study irrelevant subjects, they may not be professional enough to survive in the society, as Hong Kong is a knowledge-based society, it requires more and more professional workers, therefore, this cannot help them to survive in the society.

Besides, the new curriculum integrated from four years to three years, which means students need to study the four-year knowledge in three years, it may be too difficult for adolescents that they need to learn something which is not suitable in their level in S.4. Thus, students may not be able to get a good result in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, and therefore they cannot have a great diploma to find university or jobs in the society. Therefore, this difficulty is one of the factors that affect adolescents to survive well in the society.

In 2012, there will be more competitive for fighting the quota of university, as both F.6 and F.7 students will go into university in the same year, they may have less chance for getting in school. In the 21st century, the number of university student are numerous, moreover, the university certificate has already became a must in the future, if a person without a university certificate, he or she must not able to survive in the 21st century indeed.

All in all, as there are many factors in the new senior secondary curriculum, I think the new education curriculum is unable to help adolescents survive well in the 21st century.

  25. To large extent, I think Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

What are the characteristics require for the adolescents to survive well in the 21th century? Since Hong Kong is a knowledge-based city, knowledge, innovation and have a higher education level are very important in order to survive in the society. As they receive a higher education, they can easily find a job with relatively high salaries. Also, other skills such as time management skills, problems solving skills, financial management skills are also important, these can help in making schedule, financial plan. Apart from that, a high Adversity Quotient is important, when we face adversity, we are eager to cope with in stead of avoiding it, we can also handle our emotion well when we are facing adversity.
Although the curriculum is compressed from four year to three year, and some of the syllabus in form 7 are moved to form 4 to form 6 in the New Senior Secondary, many people think that the students may have obstacles in studying such difficult knowledge, and they have less time to prepare for the public examination lead to a poor result in the public exam. Hence, they become less competitive in the society. Yet, I still think the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, the New Senior Secondary provides an opportunity for all the students to go to the university. Under this education system, the students only need to take the HKDSE, instead of first taking the HKCEE then follow by the HKALE, if they have a good result in the HKDSE, they may do to the university, but in the past, the students have to take another exam so as to go to the university.

Second, Other Learning Experience (OLE) becomes a compulsory part of the curriculum. This can helps to broaden the students’ horizons; also to learn more things that cannot be learn in the normal lessons, these make them become more realistic, so they can survive well in the society.

Moreover, the applied learning is new to this curriculum; this can help the youngsters who are weak in studying to adapt to the society, the applied learning have six areas of study ranging from Creative Studies, Media and Communication, Business, Management and Law, Services, Applied Science to Engineering and productions, if the adolescents cannot go to the university, this can helps them to survive well in the society, the Creative Studies helps them to be more innovative, in the Service area, they may learn the Hospitality Services like the Hospitality Services, Hotel Operations and Western Cuisine and so on, this can be a way for them to take part in the tertiary industry like the hotel.

Besides, the curriculum allow the student to study the subject whatever they want, they can study the science subject together with the art subject, for example, the student can study Chemistry, Biology and Chinese Literature at the same time, the students can select their favourite subjects, once they study their favourite subject, they have the motivation to study well in the subjects, then they easily get a good results in the public exam, go to a good university and thus they can get a good job, and they can survive well in the society.

Last but not the least, the liberal studies becomes a core subject under the NSS, the Liberal Studies can develop students’ critical thinking skills, this can help them to think in various aspects, this skills can help them to survive well in the society.

To sum up, the NSS curriculum can help the teenagers to acquire the life skills that can survive well in the society, they can also learn more as they can study different elective subjects, and also they can become more realistic. So, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  26. To a small extend, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the Adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

In the past, if we want to survive well in the society, hard-working is very important. As very few people completed the university in the past, they quitted school and went out for work. So, hard-working is very important in bygone days. Nowadays, Hong Kong is known as a prosperity and competitive city. In order to survive well in the 21st century, only hard-working is not enough. Also, high AQ, EQ, IQ, high education level, and life skill are needed. If a teenager contains the above skills or more, it means that he/she can survive well in the 21st century.

This year is the first NSS academic year for Form 4 students. The New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS) is used instead of the old system. However, I think the New Senior Secondary Curriculum cannot help the Adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, compare with the old system, the NSS system is more flexible than the old one, it lets students to choose any subjects they like. This gives students freedom, but it may damage the future of the students. For example, a student has chosen History, BAFS and Biology, which are his first three choices. However, the three subjects cannot mix together and they don’t have much relationship between each other. As a result, the student will not as professional as a student who chose three subjects that all related to Science or Arts.

Second, the NSS system integrated four years knowledge to three years. Although the syllabus will reduce a bit, the students still need to learn the knowledge of form 7 in form 4 to 5. Also, the schedule of teaching is very tight. So, the students cannot digest the skill quickly and the others are coming. They cannot get the knowledge well. Thus, the students cannot use the skill that they’ve learnt in the future when they work.

Last but not least, there are two groups of students that will graduate in 2010, which are now the form 4 and form 5 students. They should fight for the quota of the university. Although there will be more quota in the university in2010, it gives the graduators much pressure during the examination. If students cannot go into the university because of this pressure, they cannot study in the university. So, it will affect the future of the students.

In conclusion, although the NSS system has many advantages, it cannot help students to survive well in the 21st century. The system gives student freedom to choose their favorite subjects, but some of them may relate to each other. Next, the system integrated four years knowledge to three years, students may find difficulties during teaching. Lastly, the students will graduate in a more competitive environment in 2010. So, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the Adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  27. To a small extent, I think that the New Senior Secondary helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st Century.

First, let's have a look at the elements that help adolescents to survive well. As Hong Kong is a knowledge-based economy, adolescents should have sufficient knowledge to help themselves survive in this ever-changing society. So they should try to learn effectively and know how to apply what they have learnt. Other than the knowledge that they learnt form books, life skills are needed so that they know how to cope with the challenges in life. Goal-setting, financial management, time management, and knowing how to cope with adversity are some of the examples.

Second, let's talk about the New Senior Secondary System. One of the features is that we can choose our electives according to our own will. We can study both science subjects and arts subjects. There is a greater flexibility that we have a chance to choose our favourite subjects. However, problems arise. As there is correlation between different subjects, sometimes we need the help of the knowledge of other subjects in order to let us to get a better understanding of certain kind of knowledge. For example, when we are studying Biology, some basic knowledge of Chemistry or Physics may be required. If one does not study all the Science subjects, they might not get the full-scale knowledge and they might find it difficult when studying. They would be inferior to those who got the all-round knowledge.

Third, the new core subject - Liberal Studies could not help students much. This subject requires students to integrate the knowledge of different areas, such that we could view the problems extensively. At the same time, this provides opportunities for us to discuss various kinds of issues and we can learn how to think critically. However, as the knowledge learnt is too broad, we do not have enough time to have an in-depth understanding on different modules. If the students could not grasp the skills of learning this subject, they become uninterested and unmotivated to learn further. It does not help much on helping adolescents to survive well.

On the other hand, some students may not be capable to learn all the knowledge in this short period of time. These students may not get a good result in the public examination and they can't get into the university. They would become the unprofessional when compared with the university students. As a university certificate is an entry pass for people to join the workforce, those students would become more uncompetitive. People use their knowledge to earn a living in this knowledge-based economy so the one who does not have enough professional knowledge couldn't survive well.

To sum up, I think the New Senior Secondary System defeats the purpose of helping the adolescents to survive well. The competitive ones could survive easier in the society while the uncompetitive ones would have a harsher live. The government should provide more opportunities for them to get in touch with the society, such that they could prepare for their future. Providing more job opportunities in the creative industry is another way for adolescents' career development as well as a way for Hong Kong's development. I believe that everyone has his/her potentials, so let's make good use of them to help you survive well in this society!

  28. To a small extent, I think the NSS curriculum cannot help the students to survive well in the 21st Century

In 21st century, people need to acquire various specialized techniques, in-depth knowledge, creativity, high intellectual quotient to strive the chance for survive in the society. Generally speaking, a diploma or a certificate from universities or public exam is highly weighted for finding a job. The background of the family can easily affect the subsequence of teens too.

First, the syllabus is compressed from 4 years to 3 years. The level of HKCEE is agreed as the most difficult but important test in Hong Kong. It needs a long time to prepare for both teachers and students. For the new syllabus, the HKCEE is cancelled and a new diploma exam is introduced. It squeezes such a difficult task to be a three years-finished task. From a student’s eyes, it is too harsh. They will be hard to prepare for the exam.

Second, NSS allowed students to choose their electives freely, and not limited by science or art subjects restriction as before. However, it makes students fail to be professional in a certain aspect, and the allied and poor organized knowledge formed in our brain. The linkage between subjects is less than the old curriculum. Students cannot be profession in a specific aspect of academic development. It finally result reduction of effectiveness for revision and teaching progress. Students need to be hard-work than before, in order to be well prepared for the public exam.

Third, the 3 years senior curriculum may decrease student’s quality. In before, students need to face two public exams to get a permit to universities. Students who can promote to S6 have a higher mark than those who cannot. It can eliminate the number of students and train the remaining to be elites. Those who have lower interest of studying can choose their ways to go, when they finished S.5. For the NSS, although some students have less interest in studying, they should finish their formal schooling until S.6. It wastes their time and bring bad learning atmosphere to the school. The poor quality of learning may be resulted. It reduces our student’s quality and harder to be accepted by universities.

To sum up, the new syllabus provides a flexible choice of subjects. It breaks the unpleasant limit for the students. However, it brings many adverse effects. Students cannot use the linkage between subjects to build up a better learning progress. Also, they don’t have any past paper, and the syllabus is said to be too hard for students. Students are difficult to prepare well for the exam. All these restraints will decrease the quality of students after they finish their formal schooling. It reduces the competitiveness of students and our ability to survive in 21st century.

  29. To a small extent, I think that New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

Nowadays, Hong Kong has been transformed to a knowledge-based society. If the adolescents want to survive well in the 21st century, it had better acquire different kinds of knowledge and a higher education level, and be creative and enhance their critical thinking skill so as to be more competitive and find a good job in the future when comparing with last century. However, I don’t think the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can enhance the adolescents’ above-mentioned abilities and skills.

First of all, since there are two groups of students which are studying in form 4 and form 5 students, fighting for the limited quota of universal chance. They must spare no pains in studying and engross on learning only, it may motivate to study and get a good result in the public exam.

However, if there are two groups of students, having the public exam to fight for the universal quotas in the same years. It may decrease their opportunities of getting into university. If they can’t further their studies and lack of knowledge, they may not able to survive in the knowledge-based society. Also, not all the foreign universities accredit the new exam system, and students may have less chance to stud oversea and widen their horizon. Actually, studying oversea is a perfect experience for students because they will know more other countries’ country. If they can study in America, UK, Canada and so on. They may get a great improvement in English which is very useful in Hong Kong so as to enhance their competitiveness.

Moreover, under the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, the adolescents are allowed to choose different types of subject in accordance with their interests. For instance, if you choose Chemistry, you can choose BAFS also (It is not allowed under the previous curriculum). Actually, the students may experience in various perspective. However, hey may not study the electives well due to the fact that it is not relevant. In the pervious Curriculum, the student has the limitation that they must study a course of science or the liberal arts. There is relevant between every subject, such as particles and cells. ‘Particle’ is one of the topics in Chemistry while ‘Cells’ is one of the topics in Biology. However, refer to the above-mentioned example; there is absolutely no relationship between BAFS and Chemistry. Thus, is may affect adolescents’ academic results and lessen their competitive.

Furthermore, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum has integrated from four years to three years that means the adolescents need to finish studying the four-year knowledge of the old system within 3 years in the new curriculum. It may increase their stress and pressure. Moreover, some students may not be able to learn something which is over their original level. It will give rise to a poor grade of adolescents in the public exam and then they may not become not competitive and survive well in the society.

As the above-mentioned evidences, I think the New Senior Secondary Curriculum in Hong Kong help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century to a small extent.

  30. In a small extent, I think the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.
The secondary curriculum is change to 3 years junior form, 4 years senior form and 4 years university education. And student need to study 4 cores subjects, that are Chinese, English, Mathematics, Liberal Studies. And students also have three electives. Aside from that, also have Other Learning Experiences are also required compulsorily which occupies 15% of the total learning hours. Students must reach the requirement of having 405 hours of Other Learning Experiences within the 3 years of high school. In that New Senior Secondary Curriculum student can choose the subjects that they like.
The EDB claims that the good point of running the New Senior Secondary curriculum is that students can choose the subjects they are interested in or has talent. That may be right. But how about the student can’t be chose in their favorite subjects. Thus, students are unable to survive in the 21st century which is a knowledge-based society. Also, students may not know the related concepts which are taught in other electives and become uncompetitive with other countries’ students.
Under the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum, in 2012 there will be more competitive for fighting the quota of university, as both F.6 and F.7 students will go into university in the same year; they may have less chance for getting in school. In the 21st century, the number of university student are numerous, moreover, the university certificate has already became a must in the future, if a person without a university certificate, he or she must not able to survive in the 21st century indeed. Is it good? No!
I think the old Senior Secondary Curriculum is better that the new one. Although the new one student can choose the subject which they like. I think that is not good for them.
In conclusion, although the introduction of the New Senior Secondary curriculum allows students to choose subjects on their own and provide with compulsory other learning activities to ensure their skills, the integration of high school education, the raise compulsory education and the freely choosing subjects characteristic of the New Senior Secondary curriculum make me think that the New Senior Secondary curriculum is unable to help the adolescents to survive in the 21st century.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The New Senior Secondary (NSS) curriculum has been implemented in September 2009. The "3-2-2-3" educational system is replaced by the "334". In addition, the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE)and Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) are reformed into Hong Kong Diploma of Senior Education Examination (HKDSE).
The Education Bureau (EDB) claims that the NSS curriculum can help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century. To a large extent, I do think so.
First of all, the applied learning category can let the pupils who are weak in or not interested in studying to discover and develop their interests into career. For instance, the subject "Multimedia Entertainment Studies" and "Film and Video Studies". By studying these subjects, they can have the opportunity to get involve in mass media or entertainment industry.
Moreover, the result of HKDSE is recognised by many foreign universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge etc. The NSS students can try their best in only one public exam with relatively less pressure.
Nonetheless, some people argue that the NSS curriculum is unable to help the teenagers to survive well in the community and society. The youngsters only need to face one public examination for their senior secondary school life which they will gain less experience. Since facing public examination helps students cope with pressure and adversity effectively. By having two public exams, they can understand of rule of game of society. Through out HKDSE, they cannot have "take two" for their senior secondary school life, that is unfair for them.
However, I still agree that it can help them to survive in society. This is because HKDSE is the only chance for them to enrol into university. They will be extremely hard-working than before as they know no "take two".
As a result, I think NSS curriculum can help youngsters survive well in community to a large extent.

  32. In recent years, there has been a heated debate over the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum. To a small extent, I the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

The Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum will be implemented in 2009. The curriculum is base on student-centred, whole-person development, multiple pathways, and life-long learning. These help student have more consummate development. Undoubtedly, it brings a lot of advantages.

First, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help the adolescents to become more comprehensive. They have more chances to study different aspects topic. The curriculum provides more opportunities to students as students can choose their favourite subjects to study.

Second, the compulsory Other Learning Experiences help student learn more experience. Since in the 21st century, academic result is no longer a important element of finding a job, some experiences are needed which can learn form the compulsory Other Learning Experiences.

However, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum brings a lot of disadvantage, and I don’t agree that the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First of all, the NSS curriculum integrated four years senior form to three years only. It seems that senior student can enter university early, but in fact, student have less time to study and prepare for the examination, students may not be well prepared as they need to study 4 years thing in 3 years and examination system is new. Students may not be easily handling the curriculum which may result in poor performance in HKDSE exam.

Moreover, the apply learning is not counted in HKDSE examination. Students who study the subjects in apply learning, their results are not accumulated. What they had done would be useless, it is unfair to them.

Furthermore, it will affect the study atmosphere since they only have one examination, good student and bad student need to study together. In the past, the HKCEE can help to leave some students who are smart and really want to study. But now, some students may not want to study while they need to study 1 year more, they may affect those students who want to study. Also, those who want to enter the society early may not be available anymore due to the New Secondary Curriculum.

Lastly, some motioned that Liberal Studies can help to develop critical thinking as students are required to think in different aspect independently. Liberal Studies is a new subject that it as a core subject, students are required to test it in HKDSS. However, the Liberal Studies’ learning scope is too board, student need to memorize many definitions due to the board learning scope.

In conclusion, I agree that we need a whole new education system in order to cultivate splendid fine new generation, but we need to understand that, it can not be too rushed, or else, the idea will be turned to bad. In addition, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum is not perfect yet as there are lots of issues still need to discuss. As a result, to a small extent, I the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  33. The Hong Kong has implemented the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum, different parties have various opinions on the scheme, can it help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century?

To a small extent, the NSS curriculum can help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century on the following grounds. Firstly, it has integrated the syllabus from four years into three years. The students have to learn something which outweighs their ability such as some topics should be learned in F.7. This may affect their result in the Hong Kong public examination. Thus, it reduces their opportunity to go into the universities and make a far-reaching impact on their career.

Secondly, the NSS curriculum is a new thing to all the Hong Kong students and teachers. They are not familiar with this and they cannot have a good preparation for it. The students who are going to attend the HKDSE cannot not prepare for the exam well as there aren’t any past papers in the market, the participants are not familiar with the format of the paper. Thus, this hinders them from getting a good result in the examination and affects their future development.

Thirdly, the syllabus is too broad for the students. For example, the Liberal Studies covers a lot of things but the students can only learn different knowledge superficially, the adolescents cannot have an in-depth understanding about the topics in the curriculum. Although the students may get a good result in the public exam, this is a time-wasting act. Students need to spend three years and get nothing, why don’t they spend it on other subjects which they can get useful knowledge. Studying subjects which are too broad cannot benefit the students in their future development.

Last but not least, the new assessment of some subjects cannot get the qualification of some overseas universities. According to news, the level 3 of Chinese subject is not qualified by the overseas universities and the University of Cambridge has claimed that it doesn’t want to recruit students below eighteen. This will totally affect the chance of getting into a university and this will affect the career development of the students and they may not be able to survive well.

All in all, the NSS curriculum cannot help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century as it has an integration of the topics and some of the subjects cover a wide range of things. The Hong Kong government has to improve it.

  34. To what extent does the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century? Why?”

Currently, the Hong Kong Education Bureau changed the education systems to New Senior Secondary Curriculum. It hopes that students can have diversification of studying. The followings are some examples of the changes in the NSS curriculum, students can choose various subjects as their electives, the new subjects LS, the applied learning and so on.

Although students may not accommodate with the New Senior Secondary Curriculum and the teachers may not familiar with the new syllabus of different subjects. To a large extent, I think that Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century. Thus, I would like to make an in-depth analysis on this issue.

First, in the NSS curriculum, students can choose 1 to 3 subjects freely as their elective(s). It is different from the previous curriculum that students can study arts, science and commerce at the same time. For example, they can choose ‘physics + ICT + BAFS’ to study in the 3 years Senior Secondary. As they can choose the subjects according to their interest, it will foster their learning attitude. Besides, they can learn a wide range of knowledge from their electives. Thus, it can enhance the competitiveness of adolescents in the 21st century.

Second, the core subjects of NSS curriculum are Chinese, English, Mathematics and Liberal Studies. The new subjects LS include various topic which closely related to our life. For example, one of the topics of LS is ‘Hong Kong Today’. Students need to know more about the current news of Hong Kong. They have to discuss the ‘hot’ issue of Hong Kong such as the ‘Five Constituencies Resignation’. After studying Liberal Studies, students can concentrate on the social issue. Also, LS can train students’ thinking in various aspects. Thus, it can foster the independence thinking of adolescents. As a result, the new arrangement of NSS curriculum helps adolescents to survive well in 21st century.

Third, apart from the core subjects and electives, students can also choose applied learning to study. It is suitable for the students who are not interested in the traditional subjects such as science, commerce and so on. Applied learning teaches students some skill which is related to job. These subjects can enlarge the experience of adolescents on working in the society. Also, it leads students to be more competitive in the society.

To sum up, the changes in NSS curriculum helps adolescents to survive well in 21st century as it cares about the student’s interest and help student to bring their potential into fully play.

  35. The Hong Kong education system has been change into Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). There are a bit different between the old curriculum and the new one. For example, the students can study their favorite subjects in the new system. Some may say they’ll not be competitive with others in the society or even in the world. However, to a large extent, I think that the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.
First of all, what are the characteristics required for the students to be able to survive well in the 21st century? As we know, Hong Kong is an ever-changing and knowledge-based society; the adolescents require a high certification. It is better to have a high adversity quotient to overcome the trouble. Also, some life skills are needed, such as communication skills, time management and so on.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the students have right to choose their favorite subject to study in NSS programme. Then they will study better when they are interested. For instance, a student can study Economics, Chemistry and geography at the same time. If these three subjects are his/her top three priorities, which will increase the student interest. Even though there is no linkage between three of them, it is better than he/she choose some of the subject he/she doesn’t like. In addition, they would expert on more different area. The extensive knowledge can help our adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

Second, the Other Learning Experiences (OLE) is an essential component in the NSS Curriculum. It includes different learning activities, like, Moral and Civil Education, Community Services and Career-related Experiences and so on. These activities can widen students’ horizon and nurture positive values and attitudes. For example, practical working can have an in-depth understanding of adolescents’ community. Selling flag can develop a sense of belonging to the community. They can enrich students’ experience to help survive well in 21st century.

Last but not the least, currently, HKDSE has been recognized by various overseas universities. Moreover, Hong Kong has a similar education system with foreign countries like U.S.A and Singapore. The students have more chance to study. They would become more competitive to survive well in 21st century.

To sum up, with the evidence that mentioned above, we can see that under this NSS curriculum, students will have a whole person and balanced development so as to survive well in 21st century. so To a large extent, I the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

  36. To a small extent, I think that the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum helps the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.
As the rapid development on the technologies, the economy has changed to knowledge-based economy, which requires the people to have high education level with the related and in-depth knowledge. That is they are required to have a Bachelor degree. Also, the results of HKCEE and HKALE are very important for the adolescents finding jobs. However, the New Senior Secondary Curriculum cannot let the adolescents to have the above characteristics in order to raise their competitiveness. The following is my opinions on the new education system.
First, the new system cannot help the adolescents to have specificity on their subjects. Although it is said that the new system is more flexible than the old one, the students can choose the subjects that they are interested in. However, it may cause the lack of some of the knowledge because some of the subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology are inter-related. For example, there are some terms or phenomenon in Biology which require the knowledge in Chemistry to explain. Under this situation, the students who only study Biology cannot completely understand the terms and only learning by rote. It is not good for the students because they do not really know the things they learn. It means that they are not professional enough. As a result, they become less competitive than others.
Second, the new system compresses the syllabus of four years into three years. In the past, the students learnt the knowledge within four years. But the students under the new system need to finish their syllabus in the three years. It is difficult for them study so much because some of the syllabus do not suits their level. The students may not be able to get good result in HKDSE. As a result, they are not competitive enough for surviving in the 21st century.
Last but not least, the new system compels the students to study until form six. There are some students which are not interested in studying or they are not good at studying. Those students may create a bad atmosphere on studying during the lessons. As a result, other students which are interested in studying or good at studying will be affected by those students. Gradually, the good students become not interested in studying and they cannot get good results in HKDSE. Finally, they are not competitive enough in the 21st century.
In conclusion, the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum is not capable of helping the adolescents to survive well in 21st century. It may lowers the specificity of the students, too difficult for the students to learn and may let the bad students affect the good students. As a result, their competitiveness will be lower.

  37. To a small extent, I agree with the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

Nowadays, Hong Kong have been changed, it was returned to Mainland China and the Education system have to change as same as China to connect with China’s education system, so there are the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum.

For the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, it summary the four years educations into three years, then the students no need to study for a long time. Also the government cancels the HKCEE, it helps the education result are not really good students to have more education. Moreover, the focus of NSS system is the critical thinking, the new subject Liberal Studies can train the students think wider and not only one side.

Unfortunately, the NSS is too new, Hong Kong government has no experience of it, it cancels the HKCEE can help the low education students to have a higher education but it also affect the high education students. The cancels of HKCEE makes the low education students can still study with the high education students but they may have the ability to study the high education, it will only add the pressure on them. Although it seems they get a higher education but they learn nothing from the study and it will affect them to get a high income job.

The Liberal Studies can train for student’s critical thinking but the limit is too wide, it almost includes every subject, the student cannot have the direct target to study. Too many subject include together will increase the hard of the subject and it will make the student confuse about it; it will only cause the negative effect that the student cannot get the good result in this subject and low down the total of the academic result.

On the other side, the NSS program can let the student choose the subject they have interest, then they can have the Science, Literature, Business subject at the same time. Nevertheless, most of the subjects are not related to each other then the student cannot study effectively. Also the subjects are too wide that disperse their focus then they will not have the special skills and hard to find the job in the society.

All in all, the way of NSS program is good and it can help the students but it still have too many mistake such as the subject is too wide and cannot focus, cancel of HKCEE that the low level of education student still have to study for one more years for nothing, the program still have lots of things to improve.

  38. To what extent does the Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century? Why?”

Hong Kong New Senior Secondary Curriculum can help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century.

First, it make the student can more enjoy and realize the university’s life and more deeply understand the electives which they had choose. At the student needs to face two public exams and only use 3 years to study the university, it is too much pressure for them.

Besides, escape England, Australasia, etc, other countries are using the four years to study the university. When Hong Kong change to using the 4 years to study in university, the student can study in different countries easily. As a result, student can study in other country more easily, so, those student can

Second, when the student only needs to face one public exam, the opportunity of being a university student, the job opportunity also will be increase. Apart from that, the student got more job opportunity, then the unemployment rate also will be decrease.

Furthermore, the HKSAR put a lot of budget to this new senior secondary curriculum. The main objective of promote this plan is though this 12 years education, they can have more job opportunity, and be a success person.

Third, last but not least, the new senior secondary curriculum is student need to have the other learning experience to be one of the factor of learning. Though this OLE, student can learn who to maintain the social harmony, doing the opportunity job.

In conclusion, the new senior secondary curriculum only brings the advantages to the student. First, it can let the student study in other country more easily. Second, student can have more Job opportunity. Third , student can more community involvement.

  39. To one side extent, the Hong Kong senior secondary
curriculum can not helps adolescents to be able to surive well in the 21st Century.

I think the New senior secondary curriculum have one problem to the students. In the New senior secondary curriculm only have one public exam, that means students will only focus on that only one public exam. Then, students wil have very deep pressure and make the students more neverous and scary. At the same time ,that means the knowledge of the past 6 years' question will appear in the public exam paper. In the past , students'knowledge of the past 4 years will appear in the public exam paper. Therefore,I think this pressure to the students is very deep.

To the other side extent, the Hong Kong senior secondary curriculum can helps adolescents to be able to surive well in the 21st Century.

Firstly, the Nss curriculum is very free for students. In the Nss curriculum ,students can chosse the 3 subjects they want to learn.I think
choose subjects is very important to the students .If students like that subject, students will learn that subjects conscientious.eveyone like to do somethings they like to do and quality will be good and high. Therefore,I think
the this part of Nss curriculum is very good.

Secondly, the Nss curriculum can help adolescents have more knowledge of the job.If you want to do the job in the future ,you can choose the subject about the job in the Nss curriculum. For example,If you want to be a doctor in tne future ,you can choose chemistry, physics and biology. This part is also improtant to the students.

Thirdly, you can have some OLE in the Nss curriculum. This part of the Nss curriculum is very good .This part can help adolescents to make work experience and make the students more clever.OLE also can help students learn to communicate with people and make students have nice interpersonnal relationship.Students also can learn some professional knowledge.

Fourthly,In the Nss curriculum, the public exam paper will contain the knowledge of the past 6 years, that means that students will work harder than the public exam paper contain the past 4 years.I think this is a merit of the Nss curriculum.

In conclusion, the new senior secondary curriculum bring more advantages than the HKDSE.
I think the new senior secondary curriculum is excellent. Therefore,I think the new senior secondary curriculum can make students better and better.

  40. I think that we can study in Secondary Curriculum help the adolescents to be able to survive well in the 21st century. we can choose some subject in Science or Liberal arts.but in 20st century they can not choose many subject they just can choose Science or Liberal arts. For example we can choose economic and chem. or bio. togeter but they can not they can just choose all science or just choose all liberal art.But now we can have more choose. So that we can have more freely.
Now we have HKDSE but in 20st century they do not have HKDSE they just have Alevel so that they can not review more about there subject. But now we have HKDSE we can learn more about what we choosed subject(in f.3).
In 21st century we also want to have other learning experience so that we can have more learning experience in our life. For example we want to have play music or you can play some sport. In addition to we want to have some work experience we want to do some part time in our summer hoilday,so that we can learn more about the social in our community. So we can do good more in our community.
So that I think in 21st century we are very happiness.
